Last Thursday, for once, I was so glad to have checked to see whether school was cancelled before driving over. There were only 10 minutes left before leaving, but luckily, I had the presence of mind to check! It has not always been the case...
After that we had regained our composure after the early morning scurry, I had two children willing and ready to do some learning at home. I took advantage of their motivation to prepare a craft and teach them more about bees.
First of all, we built a cute little "La Ruche Royale" beehive out of cardboard. It is very practical because it can hold information cards inside!
My children (re)learned many things and it is my pleasure to share their discoveries with you.
The female bee, called "worker bee", could outwork any machine!
The male bee, called "drone", is expelled from the hive before winter when there is no more queen bee to fertilize.
60 000 bees live in one Hive! During the summer, a worker bee lives between 5 to 6 weeks.
Everything turns around the Queen in the hive. Her role? To lay eggs... over and over again! A Queen can live from 3 to 5 years.
Sometimes, the Queen lays so many eggs that there are too many bees in the Hive. The Hive must then split into two colonies. This is called swarming.
A bee's life is short, but it has time to accomplish 6 different jobs!
1) Cleaning: it cleans the cells.
2) Nursing: it feeds the larvae and the Queen.
3) Building: it produces the wax that is used to create new cells.
4) Managing: it stores the honey and pollen.
5) Protecting: it prevents invaders from entering the Hive.
6) Gathering: it collects pollen and nectar and, then, brings it back to the Hive.
Royal Jelly strengthens immune systems and prevents illnesses.
Propolis is used in alternative medicine.
That was short summary of all of what my children learned that morning!
As a reward for their hard work, they got to sample a little treat: Organic Propolis Gum.
A natural delight that does not contain added sugar or colour additives.
Our gum is naturally flavoured with Honey or Lemon-Ginger.
Our Organic Propolis Gum can be sucked or chewed on throughout the day just to enjoy or to improve oral hygiene!
Did you know that our Gum can also be swallowed?
A simple way to add a little sweetness to your day while helping your body combat the cold and seasonal illnesses.
